Environmental Observatory

Since 2013, the Métabief – Montagnes du Jura resort has had an environmental observatory. Acting as a genuine ‘ongoing impact assessment’, this tool aims to provide information on the best way to protect and respect our exceptional natural heritage.

Every year, a team of ecologists and wildlife specialists from the Karum consultancy carries out a detailed ‘snapshot’ of our environment: flora and fauna. These ‘snapshots’ enable us to monitor changes objectively, but also to find solutions to preserve or promote habitats and species that are sometimes vulnerable.

We also demonstrate our commitment to setting an example in the implementation of our initiatives with regard to administrative and regulatory requirements, both by planning our projects in advance and by designing them to be in harmony with the environment.

Through this page, we would like to share some insights from our monitoring programme.

History

History of the Environmental Observatory

Tools

It is these wildlife specialists and ecologists who contribute to the observatory through their work, using various tools:

  • Field surveys with GPS coordinates for observations made

  • Mapping and digital archiving of all field observations made using a Geographic Information System (GIS)

  • Annual reporting of observations to the SMMO and, where applicable, to the government departments responsible for environmental conservation.

Resources

At the very least, 10 days of nature surveys (habitats, flora, fauna) are set aside each year for voluntary work organised by the Observatory, separate from the SMMO’s environmental assessment of new development projects.
